I have the honour to acknowledge the re-

ceipt of your Despatch No. 300 of the 12th. of September last

on the subject af Education in this Colony,

Since writing my Despatch No. 59 of the 13. 3rd. ultimo on the subject of Mr. Young Hee's salary, I have

received your Despatch No. 16 of the 16th. January last on

the subject of the Sterling Scheme of Salaries. I propose to

take into consideration the Sterling Salary to be given to Mr.

Young Hee in conjunction with the question of fixing Sterling

Salaries for other Officers holding non-clerical posts the

salaries of which exceed $1,200 per annum and I shall address

you separately on the subject.

I enclose for your consideration and ap-

proval a statement, in the form of a Supplementary Estimate,

of the expenditure which I have authorised during the current

year out of the lump sum of $20,000 voted on the Estimates for improvements in Education. I have included in the statement

the salaries of the new Masters who have been added to the

Department, but a separate vote will be taken in the Legisla-

tive Council for their salaries in accordance with your
