With reference to my open Despatch No.57T
of the 26 instant, I have the honour to transmit for your
information the enclosed plan of Stonecutters' Island, showing
the position of the forts, the boundaries of those portions
of the Island which the War Department claim as its property,
and the site of the proposed prison. The Island is composed
of a succession of mall hills, the only flat ground of any
extent being the site of the proposed prison.
2.
I have received on the 19th. instant a
letter from Vice-Admiral Sir Cyprian Bridge enquiring if it
would be possible to accommodate 60 Naval prisoners, and
suggesting the possibility that the Admiralty would contribute
to the cost of the prison extension in the event of the
additional accommodation being supplied. I have informed the
Vice-Admiral of the proposal to build an additional prison
on Stonecutters' Island and that I saw no reason why addition-
al accommodation should not be provided if the Admiralty are
prepared to contribute to the cost of building the prison.
RIGHT HONOURABLE
JOSEPH CHAMBERLAIN, M.P..
