Government House,

n5th

27 APR 03

March, 1903.

I have the honour to transmit fer your

consideration the enclosed copy of a letter from the Captain

Superintendent of Police in which he recommends a small increase

in the Pelice Force of this Colony, from the beginning of

next year. I am satisfied that a certain increase is necessary

and I had myself called for a report on the subject from the

Captain Superintendent of Police before his proposals were

sent in to the Government.

2.

The total extra expenditure which the

adoption of his proposals will involve is estimated at about

$3,900, which will allow for the appointment of eight Indian

and four Chinese Constables, besides two seamen, and an extra

engineer, stoker, coxswain and coolie. I agree with Mr. Badeley

that this increase cannot be looked upon as final. There has

been an increase of crime in the Colony during the past few

months, and it is not improbable that it will be necessary to

materially augment the Police Force in the near future. Me an-

while I have the honour to request your authority to make the

necessary provision in the 1904 Estimates for the increase

RIGHT HONOURABLE

JOSEPH CHAMBERLAIN, M.P.,
