Sections 183, 185 and 188 are in accor-

dance with the recommendations of Messrs. Chadwick and Simpson.

The following are the principal sections

of the Ordinance involving compensation for loss of property.-

Section 151. The limitation of living

rooms to a depth of 40 feet, except in the case of corner

buildings and except in the case of buildings erected on the

Praya Reclamation (where the Crown Lease specially provides

for the erection of buildings of a greater depth than 40 feet),

will result in a certain number of claims for the resumption

of the land required by this Section to be left unbuilt upon

in excess of the open spaces required in the front and the

rear of the building". Taking 15 feet as the average width of

a Chinese house including the proportional thickness of the

side-walls there will be.-

Therefore the maximum area of a building lot which can be

utilised will be 957 equals about 64 Square feet. Any

15 building lot therefore, other than a corner one, of a

greater depth than 64 feet, which is at present occupied by

a building, will result in a claim under this section when the

building is re-bullt. The number of such building lots in the

City of Victoria is 176 only. It may be assumed that under

ordinary circumstances only one or two of such buildings will
