With reference to Sir William Gascoigne's 02

Despatch No. 254 of the 14th. June last, in which he explained the necessity for taking a vote (No. 14) for training certain

nullahs in the western portion of the City and exterminating

the fever-breeding mosquitoes which were a serious menace to

health in that locality, but added that he had given instruc- tions not to proceed with the work (owing to the necessity to reduce expenditure on Public Works), I have the honour to draw

your attention to the fact that it was not found possible to

avail of your permission to provide for this work in the

Estimates for the current year.

That the work is still of a very urgent

character is shown by the fact that several representations

on the subject have been made to the Government by inhabitants

of the districts concerned, and at present much difficulty is

being met with in letting houses in districts so notoriously

unhealthy.
