A notice by T'io Tsz, General for the Chinese cause, in

the Canton province of the Shun T'in (Obedient to Heaven) King-

dom of the Ming Dynasty.

The principles of right have been made manifest, the

descendants of Han (i.e. the Chinese) will flourish.

This is a notice for pacifying the people. Every one of

you should be glad to hear it.

In the Tsing Dynasty, there are no right principles, the

officials are greedy and selfish, they do harm to the whole

world, taxes and likin are increased, subscriptions and extor-

tions are numerous, they exhaust the substance of the people.

Consequently the anger of the people has been raised; and I

therefore raise the flag of justice. Set rid of the Manchus

and lift up the Chinese. This will be for the general good,

and not for private ends. Protect the merchant and uphold

religion, and thereby lay the foundation of a great peace.

Rescue the common people and punish the criminal. Obey heaven,

and seize this opportunity. All you scholars and common people

will then be at peace with one another. Do not doubt!

Ming Dynasty, 1st Year

Vonth

Day.
