properly trained officers should be obtained and I therefore
submit that an Assistant Engineer be asked for at the salary
fixed in the Sterling Scheme for appointment made in England
namely 2560 rising to £480. I am of opinion that the salary
provided for the Assistant Land Surveyor (the word Assistant
does not occur, but should be inserted)in that Scheme is suf-
ficient to secure the services of a qualified Surveyor.
In both cases, there should be a travel-
ling allowance. In the last appointments made this was fixed
at 8244 per annum, a somewhat exceptional figure. The usual
amount is $50 per annum.
