I have the honour to request that steps

may be taken to fill the vacancies caused by the departure of

Mr. Hughes, Assistant Engineer, and the death of Mr. Jacob,

Assistant Land Surveyor, by requisitioning for officers from

England.

Both these Officers were engaged locally

and the salaries fixed in respect of their appointments were:-

Mr. Hughes, $1,300 rising to $2,400, by $300 triennially.

Mr. Jacob, $1,500 rising to $1,800, by one increment at the end of 3 years.

Mr. Hughes received exchange compensation;

Mr. Jacco did not. Each had a travelling allowance of $270 per

2000:0.

The Sterling Scheme gives the salaries

as £270, rising to 2830, and 8800 rising to £560 respectively.

It will be seen that the relative order of the salaries is re-

versed in the Sterling Scheme.

It very rarely occurs that the services

of any one suitable for such appointments can be secured locally

it is a mere chance that such a thing happens, and, as a matter

of fact, I have not heard of any one nor has any one applied

to me during the interval that the appointments have been

vacant.
