Sir,
I have the honour to trangit for your
consideration the enclosed copy of a letter from the Director
of Public Works requesting that steps may be taken to fill
the vacancies caused by the departure of Mr. Hughes, Assistant
Engineer who recently absconded from the Colony, and the

death of Mr. Jacob, Assistant Land Surveyor, which occurred
at the end of 1901, and recommending that in both cases the
salary fixed in the Sterling Scheme should be offered to can-
didates for the appointments. I attach particulars of the
vacant offices.
I shall be glad if you will take steps to
have candidates selected for these posts.
