I have the honour to transmit for your

infomation the enclosed copy of a report by Dr. Thomson on

the results of an inspection of the nullahs of the Western

part of the City of Victoria with a view to ascertaining the

extent of the prevalence of the larvae of anopheles in this

district.

In paragraph 2 of his report Dr. Thomson

states that in his opinion the training of the nullah above

Ripon Terrace, West of the Nethersole Hospital is the most

pressing of all measures for the diminution of malaria in

this Colony, and Mr. Tooker of the Public Works Department has estimated the cost involved at $2,400.

There is no Vote in the Estimates for the current year to meet the cost of training mullahs; for you 29will remember that, although in your Despatch No. 230 of the

31st. of last July you approved of provision being made for

a sum of $9,000, it was subsequently not found possible to 02

make the provision, and I informed you to that effect in my Despatch No. 448 of the 8th. of last October,

In view, however, of Dr. Thom son's strong recommendation and of the urgency of this matter, I have the honour to request your sanction for the expenditure of $2,400
