I have the honour to transmit for your

consideration the enclosed copy of a letter from Mr. H. G.

Fisher, Assistant Engineer in the Public Works Department,

pointing out that his agreement terminates on the 22nd. of

next May and enquiring whether it is the intention of the

Government to offer to retain his services.

2.

When Sir William Gascoigne in Despatch

No. 267 of the 23rd. of last June recommended the appointment

of an additional Executive Engineer for the supervision of

Public Works Extraordinary, he recommended Mr. Fisher for the

post and in paragraph 6 of my Despatch No. 481 of the 5th. of

Fisher for

O last November, I had the honour to recommend Mr.

the maximum pay of his rank $3,000.

3.

The pay of an Executive Engineer is $3,000

vising to $3,600 by $300 triennially or £480 rising to £600

by £40 triennially, and as Mr. Fisher is a very good and a

very hard-working Officer, I venture to suggest that on the

completion of his agreement he should be offered the post of

Executive Engineer, as originally recommended by Sir William

Gascoigne

JOSEPH CHAMBERLAIN, M.P
