We have the honour to acknowledge receipt of your despatch No. 3524/1902 of January 1902 informing us that Mr. Secretary Chamberlain is willing to invite the Government of HongKong to agree to the proposals set forth in our letter to you dated 8th October 1901, on the following terms:-

That on condition we construct a Dry Dock on the site we are to be granted a 999 years' Lease of Marine Lot No. 3 in HongKong.

That the condition for the grant to us of a 999 years' Lease of quarry Bay Marine Lot No. 2 (Exten- sion) shall be the construction of two large Patent Slips instead of the Dock previously agreed to.

We readily assent to the understanding that the Dock on Marine Lot No. 3 will be constructed in accordance

with the requirements of the Admiralty who will

be supplied with Plans so soon as they are completed.
