Dear Mitchell,

Cromwell Hpuse,

Andover, July 18th, 1898.
I am very sopry to hear that you have to be invalided out of the Service on account of defective vision. I feared, and I think I told you at the time, that the Opthalmia and severe attack of Fever you contracted at Hong Kong during your plucky and arduous service at the Plague Hospital in 1894 would be the cause of future trouble. I have no g doubt but that the Opthalmia you contracted then was caused by your bein inoculated by flies after having settled on the eyes, etc.of plague patients, but, as you know, this sort of disease is not considered by
Their Lordships as being alearly due to the Service. Still, as a record
of your service exists at the Admiralty Their Lordships may be pleased to take this into consideration when awarding your pension. I hops they will do so,but, at the same time, I think you have no "right",to expect it
If I remember rightly only two of the sick berth staff on the Station volunteered for the dangerous service at the Plague Hospital
and you were one of them, and I sincerely hope Their Lordships will take
4 this into their consideration when awarding your pension.
Signed,
Very faithfully yours,
T.H.Knott,
Inspector General.
