Subsequently a letter was received by the Chairman
from the Yangtse Valley Syndicate formally offering the sum of £1,500, but a reply was returned to the same effect as stated above.

Our technical Director has since been in London and confirmed fully his previous estimate of £9,000 or
thereabouts.

The matter now awaits the decision of Mr. Secretary Chamberlain and has therefore not been, as yet, brought before my Board; but I may add that its decision is subject to the approval of the Oriental Telephone Company who practically own this Company and whose Chairman Sir Auckland Colvin is at any time ready to call at the Colonial Office to furnish further information if desired.
6. On the other hand, the granting of this Company's request to be indemnified to the extent of one third of its compulsory outlay, would of course remove all controversy.
