dollars from £70. 168. 8d. in May 1892, when the sum was fixed,
to £44 15s. 10d. at the present time. Whilst, therefore, the
expenditure has been increased by some 50 per cent, the value
of the military contribution has been reduced by approximately
the same percentage.
For these reasons the Church Body hopes that the
Military authorities will consent to increase their contribution.
In our opinion the sum of £100 per annum would now fairly
represent the ratio of the military contribution to the
expenditure, which existed in 1892. We are sure, Sir, that in
bringing the matter before you, we shall meet with your
sympathy and good wishes; and we sincerely hope that you may
be able to help us as we desire.
I have the honour to be,
sir,
Your most obedient Servant,
J. C. VICTORIA.,
Chairman of the Cathedral Church Body.
P. S. In view of the fact that I am shortly leaving
Hong Kong for England, may I request that any communications
regarding this matter may be addressed to Mr H. W. Slade,
Treasurer of the Church Body.
