With reference to your letters of the 23rd
Va August last, No.29148, and 20th ultimo, No. 44399,on
the subject of the proposed levy of rates and taxes on
Military Officers at Hong Kong occupying rateable
tenements, I am directed by the Secretary of State for
War to acquaint you for the information of Mr Secretary
Chamberlain that although the removal of the exemption
from taxation will possibly lead to increased charges
on Army Votes, Mr Brodrick concurs in the payment by
Officers on the lodging list of local rates on the
houses which they hire.
