Sir:-

In continuation of my despatch "o. 41 of ay

14th regarding the attempt by the Tongking Author-

ities to acquire a Sanatorium at Ca Tal, near

3c80,

I beg to report that I learn from trustworthy sources

that the French Roman Catholic Fission had erected

boundary stones inscribed with their name in Chinese,

enclosing some thirtsen odd mow of land on the high

land behind Macao and facing the Mine Islands.

On the Local Authorities reporting the facts to

the Viceroy, His Excellency at once gave orders and

had the boundary stones pulled up and removed, A

protest was then lodged by the French Mission

against the Viceroy' action and a claim was made

that the lesion were entitled to acquire and hold

land in the interior. The Viceroy replied that he
