Red 2 JUL 02!
Sir:-
Adverting to Mr. Bertie's letter of the 24th
of March last, I am directed by the First Commis-
sioner of His Majesty's Works, etc.,to acquaint you,
for the information of the Secretary of State for
Foreign Affairs, that the Lords Commissioners of His
Majesty's Treasury concur in the opinion that the
Old Gaol Site at Shanghai should not be disposed
of to private persons, and they consider that it may
properly be leased to the HongKong Postal Agency, on
a tenancy terminable at short notice, at the highest
rent which the Agency is willing or able to pay. The
Board are, accordingly, referring the matter to their
Architect in China in order that suitable terms may
be arranged with the Agency.
I am,
&c.,
W.J. Downer.
(Signed)
The Under Secretary of State,
Foreign Office.
