A deputation of Manila shippers called on
us yesterday, with the object of asking us to use our
influence to get the penalty reduced, but we refused
to meet them. We understand they now intend to pe-
tition the Magistrate for a rehearing of the case.
This of course we shall oppose. From what our Chi-
nese tell us we believe they are the principals in
the affair, but it is a forlorn hope to obtain evi-
dence against them.
The trial of the native staff of the steam-
er (41 of them are in prison) for aiding and abetting
the stowaways will be heard on 14th instant, after
which
