Sir:

I am directed by the Marquess of Lansdowne to

acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 2nd

instant, in which you enclose a copy of a letter

from the Admiralty relative to the firing of

salutes by Foreign Warships at Hong Kong during the

hours of Divine Service.

I am to state in reply, for the information of

Mr. Secretary Chamberlain, that His Lordship observes

that the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty are

of opinion that international concurrence on the

subject is improbable, and he therefore agrees in

the Governor of Hong Kong being informed accordingly,

and that no action can be taken by His Majesty's

Government in the matter.
