TEST
A PRÉCIS of Intelligence Reports enumerated in the margin is inclosed,* from which it will be seen that the activity of the French authorities in South China continues, though attended with but little success. The present movement may be said to have commenced in April last when a cable, which is supposed to connect with the land system of telegraphs at Touraine, in Anam, was secretly landed in Amoy Harbour.
In November Monkey Island in the same harbour was purchased on behalf, it is said, of the French Government, though it is difficult to see what advantages, moral or material, present or prospective, the possessor of this rocky islet can hope to enjoy.
* Cantou, Samshui, Wuchow, Swatow, and Amoy.
