On receipt of your letter of the 18th ins tent

on the subject of British Postel Agencies in China,

enquiry was made of His Majesty's Minister at Peking

whether he sew eny objection to the reduction of the

letter rate at British Post Offices to four cents

per half ounce for the United Kingdom and all British

possessions.

I am directed by the barquess of lensdowne to

inform you thet e reply has been received from ir

E. Setow stating that he sees no objection to the

proposed reduction. he points out however that as

there is no postel agency at Tients in British sub-

jects there would have to pay higher rates then

at the Southern ports of China.

Sir E. Satow therefore urges the establishment

The Under secretery of state,

Colonial Office.
