In August last I received from Messrs. Atkinson
and Dallas, a local firm of Architects and Engineers, an offer of Taels 25,000 for the "Old Gaol Site" at
Shanghai.
The question of disposing of this land has been
before the Board before. In Mr. Marshall's report
(23rd. of January 1896) to the Board, he estimated the
value of the land at TIs. 6,500 per wow, the area

In August 1896 the Board refused
an offer of Ts.10,000.
In May 1897 Mr. Cowan sent
forward an offer of Ts. 10,000 which the Board de-
clined on account of the possibility of the British
Post Office requiring the land for an extension of
their adjoining premises.
Upon receiving the offer of Ts. 25,000 (which
is in my opinion a good one) I deemed it advisable,
before submitting the matter to the Board, to ascer-
