Adverting to Mr. Bertie's letter of the 12th. of
December last and this Department's reply thereto of
the 19th. idem on the question of the disposal of the
land known as the 011 Gaol Site at Shanghai, I am di-
rected by the First Commissioner of His Majesty's
Works and Puolic Buildings, to transmit to you, here-
with, copy of a report on the subject which has now
been furnished to the Board by their Acting Officer
in China, and to state that, before submitting the
matter to the Lords Commissioners of His Majesty's
Treasury, they would be glad to be favoured with the
views of the Secretary of State thereon, with especial
reference to the penultima te paragraph, namely as to
whether this valuable plot of land should be leased
