With reference to the letter from this Depart-

ment of the 25th December last on the subject of

the retention of a piece of land adjoining the Bri-

tish Post Office at Shanghai, I am directed by the

Marquess of Lansdowne to transmit to you, to be

laid before the Secretary of State for the Colonies,

copy of a letter from His Majesty's Office of Works

enclosing a report on the subject furnished by the

Acting Officer of the Board in China, and request-

ing Lord Lansdowne's views, with special reference

to the question whether the plot of land should be

leased to the British Post Office on a Commercial

basis or at a nominal rental.

I am to request that His Lordship may be fur-

nished with any observations which Mr. Chamberlain

may have to make on the subject.
