I have the honour to acknowledge the receipt of
your despatch of the 26th October respecting the
"Perseverance" Piracy Case, and the prisoners Lei
Ah Ch'ang and others extradited from HongKong to

In recording your appreciation of these pro-
ceedings you add that you have received instructions
from His Britannic Majesty's Minister in Peking to
place yourself in personal communication with me
and arrange that hereafter in respect to criminals
extradited to Canton from Hongkong the trial and
other proceedings shall all conform to this case.
