Later on the 9th instant Mr. Chalmers reported
to me that the Police had found on board the "Peru"
a man answering to the description of the fugitive,
who held a through ticket to San Francisco under
the name of Wilder.
I have further the honour to enclose transla-
tion of the official reply which I received on the
10th instant to my two Notes Verbale, together with
a copy of a despatch from Mr. Chalmers reporting
upon the whole incident.
I propose to take an opportunity of expressing
my thanks verbally to the Minister for Foreign Af-
fairs for the prompt action taken by the Police in
the matter.

His Britannic Majesty's Chargé d'Affaires ven-
tures to solicit the good offices of His Imperial
Japanese Majesty's Minister for Foreign Affairs upon
an urgent matter which has been brought to his
notice by His Britannic Majesty's Acting Consul at
Yokohere.
His Majesty's Acting Consul has received a re-
quest from the Police Authorities at Hong Kong ask-
ing him to request the Authorities at Yokohama to
obtain the arrest of Ernest Horwitz for whom a
warrant has been issued in Hong Kong on a change of
embezzling $600 for which he is liable to twelve
months imprisonment. The accused is 22 years old,
thin, tall and clean shaven. He is supposed to have
sailed for Japan in the Steamship "Peru" on the 31st
ultimo and to have taken his passage in the name of
Frank Howard. His Majesty's Acting Consul inforus

authorities will not arrest the offender unless they
are
