With reference to my immediately preceding
despatch of this series and of the 13th instant, I
have the honour to state that I took advantage of an
opportunity on Thursday last to thank the Minister
for Foreign Affairs and Mr. Miyaoka for the instruc-
tions issued to the Yokohama Police in regard to the
supposed fugitive offender or hoard the Steamship
*Peru*.
In the course of conversation with Mr. Miya-
oka, I enquired what progress was being made with the
various Extradition Treaties which I understood the
Japanese Government were negotiating. He replied
that they were at present merely engaged in pour-
parlers with Mexico, Belgium and Holland on the sub-
ject, but that they were studying the matter carefully
