arrangement has been adopted, with success, in the case of the Tytam and Po&foolum Waterworks, Hong Kong.

In these cases, however, the interception took place, at

various points, between the storage-reservoirs, and the

filter-beds, so that the waters of the hill streams were

filtered in the main filter beds, which are close to the

town. In the present case, however, the main filter-beds

are near to the storage-reservoir, and consequently, the

water, intercepted along the conduit or main, cannot con-

veniently, be filtered, at the principal filtration-estab-

lishment. For this reason, I recommended the ostablish-

ment of small isolated filter-bods, placed at the various

points of intake, along the line of main. Further, to

facilitate managemeut, I proposed to use the Fischer-

filter, at these minor points of intake.

but, owing to the ease with which

it is cleaned, it is far more reliable than a sand-filter,

which is not efficiently managed, a condition not easily

obtained, in the case of small and scattered installatious.

For this reason, I auggested the use of these filters, at

the minor intakes. I am, however, of opinion that this

matter is not a very pressing one. Some time must lapso,

before the consumption of water will be so great as to

necessitate the utilisation of all available sources, arid,

consequently, this matter may be left in abeyance for the

present. I maintain, however, that if the water of the

tributary, or intercepted streams, requires filtration,

the Fischer-Filter affords the most efficient means of so

doing, under the special conditions of the case.
