General Gascoigne added that the consent of the War Office "is certain to be much more readily accorded if the Dock Company would guarantee to construct a Cock on the new ground likely to be of real advantage to His Majesty's Navy," e. 3. capable of holding 1st class battleships of the

On the 17th March 1999, Mr.Gillies stated in a
letter to the Director of Public Works that the proposed dock would be capable of taking in 1st class battleships of the
size of the "Victoricus."
The Military Authorities were informed by minute
dated the 23rd March, and on the 7th April 1999 the Deputy Assistant Adjutant General (A) minuted "The General Officer
Commanding has recommended the transfer to Secretary of State
for War." No reply being received the Military Authorities
were requested to remind the War Office and on the 20th
September the Deputy Assistant Adjutant General (A) minuted
"This has been done."
On the 17th October 1899 Mr.Gillies writes "The
necessity for another and larger dock at Hunghon ever increas-
ing, my Directors are most anxious to commence the construc-
tion of same" and presses for a reply to his letter of the
14th February. On the 29th November the Director of Public
Works reported that Mr.Gillies had again seen him in the
matter and begged for an early reply. "The Cock Company are
most anxious to secure the land and get to work with the
construction of the new dock which each year becomes more
urgently needed." On the 7th December 1899, the Deputy
Assistant
