With reference to your Despatch No. 204

of the 17th. of last July, I have the honour to transmit for

your information the enclosed copy of a letter from the

Government Bacteriologist, dated the 19th. August last, and to

state that the Japanese Doctors engaged to assist the permanent

Medical Staff of Hongkong in bacteriology and plague diagnosis

left the service of this Colony on the 13th. instant.

In view of Dr. Hunter's letter, I have

temporarily and subject to your approval appointed 3 Chinese

Doctors, Mr. Ho Ke Tsun, Mr. Chan Fai Kwong, and Mr. Lee Yin

Sze, to assist the Government Bacteriologist in the work of

his Department, and these 3 gentlemen commenced their duties

on the 15th. instant. They are qualified students of the

Hongkong College of Medicine, and if their services had not

been secured by this Goverment they would have, as I am

informed, accepted offers that were open to them for employ-

ment in the Straits Settlements, Shanghai, and Wei-hai-wei.

As no special provision had been made in

the Estimates of the current year for the salaries of these
