A NOTE ON THE DEFARTURE OF HIS EXCELLENCY
SIR HENRY A.BLAKE.
The Chinese Community was not a little surprised to learn that His Excellency Sir Henry Blake would depart for England on leave of absence, on the 4th January 1902. The fact is that his kind acts have been so deeply engraved in their hearts that they were hoping for ever to nestle under his wing and had no thought of leaving his shelter. But now they are like children missing their mother, sad and terrified.
His Excellency has been Governor of the Colony for exactly four years. At the time of his first arrival the authc- rities were just submitting a proposal to close all houses in side lanes and narrow streets with a view to stamping out the Flague by improving the sanitary condition of the Colony. Before approving the proposal however he went in plain clothes and with- out taking his chair or ricksha to examine himself the houses (to be closed). On his return from the visit he remarked to the authorities that a good number of the dwellings of the poor class of Chinese were very clean, much cleaner than those of the corresponding class in London, but that..they were defective in air and light which should therefore be improved.
Again a little time after this the powers that be reported that it was desirable to clear away the eating stalls in Wing Fung Street and Nullah Lane in Wantsei to keep the streets clean. His Excellency on receiving this report paid a personal visit to the places in question and finding that the
