With reference to paragraph 7 of Sir
William Gascoigne's Despatch No. 398 of the 4th. instant, I
have the honour to inform you that I have reason to believe
that a Superintendent of good Scientific training cannot be
obtained for the salary (£440 500) originally proposed by
me for this post.
2.
I have therefore to suggest that the salary
be increased to 2500 rising by triennial increments of £40 to
£620 with free quarters, the value of which will not, however,
count for pension purposes.
3.
The acquisition of the New Territories
renders the appointment a more important one than it has been
and I consider that a Superintendent of higher training than
the present Acting Superintendent, Mr. Tutcher, possesses
should be appointed. I have therefore to recommend that a
thoroughly efficient candidate be selected and sent to the
Micate
Colony.
I enclose the usual paper of particulars

JOSEPH CHAMBERLAIN, M.P..
