Government House, C.O. 40501

Sir,

With reference to your Despatch No. 206 of the 17th ultimo and to previous correspondence, I have the honour to inform you that the Acting Postmaster-General has now received a letter, copy enclosed, from the Surveyor of His Majesty's Office of Works in China offering the site of the old gaol at Shanghai on lease to this Government at a rental of 100 taels (about $150) a month.

2. This Government does not want the land at present, but I shall be glad if you can arrange that the land be neither leased nor sold nor alienated in any other way without the sanction of His Majesty's Government.

I have the honour to be, Sir, Your most obedient humble servant,

D.y. Gascoigne, Major-General, Administering the Government.

The Right Honourable Joseph Chamberlain, M.P.
