With reference to my Despatch No. 258 of the 18th June last, I have the honour to inform you that on the 7th instant, in the presence of a very large number of Officers of the Army, Navy, and Civil Service, and of Members of all nationalities of the Community, I performed the ceremony of turning the first sod of the King's Park, Kowloon, while Lady Gascoigne planted a tree in memory of the occasion.
In the remarks which I made on the occasion, I was careful to explain that many interests in connection with the land to be devoted to the Park remained to be adjusted, and I refrained from indicating what the boundaries of the Park were.
I expressed the opinion, however, that there were no insuperable difficulties in making the final adjustments and added that as the Secretaries of State for War and for the Colonies had agreed that the Park should be established, the opening of the Park could be regarded as an accomplished fact.
The opening of this Park has been hailed with great satisfaction by all classes of the Community, and
