Government House,

Hongkong, 14th August, 1902.

193

I have the honour to receive on the 8th instant, through the Government of the Straits Settlements, your telegram conveying to me His Majesty's Most Gracious Message, which was published in the local Press and in a Gazette Extraordinary on the next day and was received with every manifestation of loyalty and devotion by His Majesty's subjects in this Colony.

2.

I had previously summoned a Special Meeting of the Executive and Legislative Councils for the 9th of August to propose a telegram of respectful congratulation to His Majesty, of which a copy as transmitted to you is enclosed. The Resolution referred to therein was seconded by Dr. Ho Kai, C.M.G., the Senior Unofficial Member, was supported by Mr. C.S. Sharp, and carried unanimously. I took the opportunity to read to the Council His Majesty's message, and it was received with very great pleasure and satisfaction.

3.

Special Services were afterwards held in Saint John's Cathedral and the other Churches and were well attended by all classes of the community. Royal salutes were fired at noon from the Ships in harbour and from the shore batteries, and the City was illuminated at night and brilliant displays
