Sir,
With reference to your Despatch No. 203 of the 19th June, 1901, regarding the appointment of Mr. C. F. O'Brien as Wardmaster in the Medical Department, I have the honour to inform you that owing to Mr. O'Brien's insobriety and untrustworthiness, I have been compelled to dismiss him from the Service.
2. Under the Agreement of the 24th June, 1901, which was forwarded to this Government by the Crown Agents, it is stated that in the event of dismissal for misconduct within the period of three years from the date of his arrival in the Colony, Mr. O'Brien was bound to refund the cost of his passage from England to this Colony. As, however, Mr. O'Brien was without funds, it has been impossible for the Colony to recover the whole amount in question. A sum of $91.39 due to him as salary has, however, been recovered in part payment of his passage.
3. I enclose a statement of particulars with regard to the now vacant office of Wardmaster, and have to request that you will be so good as to instruct the Crown Agents to select a suitable candidate and send him out to this Colony.
Enclosure. (In Duplicate).
To
THE RIGHT HONOURABLE JOSEPH CHAMBERLAIN, M.P.
80.
