places situated like Houghong, emergency works must be adapted to the materials available. Special appliances, such as can readily be obtained at home, cannot be procured here.

Towards the end of the drought, the strains rendered available by the City Waterworks continued to yield about 300,000 gallons per day.

The lowest level of the water in Tai Tam reservoir, Pok Fu Lam and Wong Nai Chung being empty, was reached on the 10th instant, when there remained in it 6,000,000 gallons. At the same rate of draw-off prevailed during the preceding 18 days, or practically until the end of May. Rain began to fall in appreciable quantity on the 31st instant and, on the 13th, a fall of nearly 4 inches occurred, effectually terminating the severe drought, a drought which had extended over a period of practically 5 months. By the 25th May, the improved condition of the reservoirs justified resumption of the system of constant supply, which was accordingly put in force after a period of intermittent supply extending over 196 days, or fully 6 months.
