28 AUG 02 1 Enclosure to Despatch No.27 of the 24th July, 1902.

83

Honourable Colonial Secretary,

I attach a Return for 1900, 1901, and 1902 up to June 30th., for Europeans and Asiatics.

In the case of the Europeans a remarkable improvement is shewn for the 6 months ending June 30th., 1902, as compared with 1900 and 1901. Again, an admission now for Primary or true Syphilis is rarely seen and consequently the admissions for Secondary Syphilis have also greatly decreased.

The admissions for Gonorrhoea shew an increase but not to a great extent. On the whole a most satisfactory state of affairs and it only shows how easily Syphilis, in many places the scourge of the Army, can be grappled with.

The Asiatics shew an increase of admissions but to only a small extent, their strength was much greater in 1901 and 1902 than in 1900.

Hongkong, 21st. July, 1902.

(Sd.) G. F. Hughes,

Colonel, R.A.M.C., P.M.O. in China.
