work will be discharged this year. There have been several additions made to the building which were considered to be necessary, including chair shelter, quarters for gardeners, entrance gates and lodge, &c. The fittings obtained from England have been much more costly than was estimated and the gas and Water Supplies and fittings have also exceeded the estimates.

With regard to (2), the sewerage work was urged this year. The excess over the estimated cost appearing in the Estimates, namely £31,000, is only about $1500.

With regard to (3), some portions proved to be more costly than was estimated, foundations of bridges, &c. having to be carried to a greater depth than was anticipated. Provision under item (1) is required on account of greater progress having been made by increasing staff engaged upon the survey.

It was pointed out in the despatch to the Secretary of State (Sessional Paper No. 1901) that increased provision would be required for item (5).

The sum asked for item (4) is to cover a small expenditure on the work.
