The provision of such quarters will reduce the area available for sale by some 3,500 square feet with an estimated value of $42,000, and may possibly affect the market value of a small portion of the remainder of the site. On the other hand, the Director of Public Works reports that in preparing trial sketches for the new Post Office, accommodation for the 80 Postmen has been omitted from the list of requirements, as it was found that the whole of the site was required for a three-storied building, with basement for storage purposes in which it is proposed to accommodate the Departments mentioned. If the 80 Postmen are to be accommodated, therefore, on the new site, it will necessitate either an increase in the height of part of the new building, or a curtailment of the size of the rooms to be devoted to Offices. The latter expedient is not recommended by the Director of Public Works.
I would point out that the former would to a large extent preclude the possibility of providing for future Offices by the addition of a fourth story to the building. It is evident that as time goes on, the Post Office itself will require extension, and it is certain that more office accommodation will be required for some of the other Departments. I attach trial sketches (with details of accommodation required) prepared in the Public Works Department with the object of seeing how the accommodation required by the Departments mentioned might be provided on the site, and it appears to me that there is not room on the site for the large number of Postmen without increasing the height of the building, which, in addition to the objection I have pointed out,
