Sir,

Government House,

Hongkong, 9th July, 1902.

I have the honour to acknowledge the receipt of your Despatch No. 90 of the 27th March regarding the purchase of a site for the new Post Office, and to inform you in reply to paragraph 3 that the Offices to be accommodated on the site are those of the Colonial Treasurer, the Registrar-General, the Inspector of Schools, the Local Auditor, and the Sanitary Board Office.

2.

The present Treasury consists of a few small and badly lighted rooms situated under the same roof as the present Post Office, and they must be sacrificed when the present Post Office is vacated and the site of the building offered for sale.

The Sanitary Board and Registrar-General's Offices have for some years been accommodated in "Beaconsfield", a building rented by the Government from Mr. E. R. Belilios and at present on a three years' lease which will terminate on December 31st, 1903. The rent of this building, $5,100 per annum, will of course be saved by the removal of these Offices, and it will also be convenient to increase the number of Government Departments accommodated under one roof.
