In reply to the 2nd paragraph of your Despatch No. 185 of the 6th May last, I have the honour to inform you that the only European Interpreters now in the Government Service, besides Mr. Dyer Ball and Mr. Nelan, are Messrs. Moore and Mackie. These Officers were appointed Student Interpreters in 1897, under the Regulations of which I enclose a copy, and passed their final examinations in Chinese on the 16th November, 1900. In March of that year, Mr. Meere was temporarily attached as an Assistant Interpreter to the Magistracy, and Mr. Mackie was similarly attached, at the same time, to the Supreme Court. Mr. Moore was appointed a Demarcation Officer in the Land Court on November 26th, 1900, and Mr. Mackie received a similar appointment on the 12th August last. They are in receipt of salaries of $1,500 a year each, and Mr. Moore has been granted a travelling allowance of $180 per annum. Their work is not strictly that of Interpreters, but their knowledge of the language is of great use in their present posts.
Mr. Mackie is a son of Chief Inspector Mackie, now acting as Deputy Superintendent of Police, and is 22 years of age. Mr. Moore is the son of a former Overseer.
