You conveyed to me in your telegram of the 27th instant.

It was also decided by the Councils to abandon all the local festivities in honour of the Coronation with the exception of an entertainment which had been arranged for the benefit of the children of some of the Schools and Convents. This entertainment, at which I was present and addressed the children, took place on Saturday the 28th instant and was completely successful, the children of all the nationalities represented in Hongkong joining most heartily in the singing of 'God save the King'.
5. It was also unanimously advised by the Councils that a special Service of Intercession should be held in Saint John's Cathedral on the 26th instant. This service, at which prayers were offered for His Majesty's speedy restoration to health, was attended by Government officials, Naval and Military Officers, Foreign Consuls, and a large number of the general public. A similar service in the Chinese language was also held in the afternoon, and was largely attended.
6. It was with the feelings of the profoundest satisfaction that your subsequent telegram of the 26th instant was received, in which you informed me that the operation upon His Majesty had been successfully performed and that His progress was as satisfactory as could be expected. It is my earnest hope, and that of all His Majesty's subjects in Hongkong, that the King's restoration to health will be rapid.
