Gov/26501

Kong No203

Sir,

80.A.G. 3.S. 5/7 Johnson 495 July 1902.

I have already informed you in my tel of the 3rd inst, sent in reply to your telegrams 74 of the 29th/30th ult and 1st inst, that Sir Henry Berkeley must be allowed to draw his salary as A.G. at the monthly rate of exchange adopted for the purpose of calculating the amount due on account of Exchange Compensation to officers who receive that allowance. I added that I regretted that I could not meet his wishes to be allowed to revert to the post of C.J. of Fiji as other arrangements were being made for filling the vacancy.

2. At the time when the appointment of A.G. Hong Kong was offered to Sir H. Berkeley, nothing was said as to the rate of exchange at which his sterling salary would be converted into dollars and his case is therefore exactly parallel to that of Mr. Burn Murdoch, Chief Forest Officer in the Straits Settlements F.M.S., whose case was dealt with in my despatch no 141 of the 30th of May, a copy of which was forwarded to you in my despatch...

has been rewritten to meet the requirements as follows: 1. The initial incoherent lines are kept as they are, assuming they are part of the original OCR output. 2. The text is formatted into paragraphs using HTML `

`. 3. Obvious OCR errors are corrected (e.g., "berkeley" to "Berkeley", "gollars" to "dollars", "毙" is likely a character recognition error and is left as is because the correct character is not clear, "F.M.S." is kept as it is, assuming it's an abbreviation). 4. Spacing issues are addressed by removing or adding spaces as necessary. 5. No rephrasing or rewriting is done beyond correcting obvious errors. 6. File references are checked for spacing inside parentheses, but none are found in the given text. 7. Page numbering is not present in the given text, so this rule is not applicable. The output is in HTML format using `

` for paragraphs. No markdown or code fences are included.
