Hongkong, 24th June, 1902.
With reference to my Despatch No. 199 of the 13th ultimo, forwarding Mr. Chadwick's Reports on the Sanitation and on the Water Supply of Hongkong, I have now the honour to transmit to you the enclosed copy of a Report by the Director of Public Works shewing what steps have been taken or are in contemplation to give effect to the recommendations contained in those reports.
2. At Mr. Chadwick's instance I authorised the commencement of preliminary works in making trial borings, surveys, etc., for the works in the Tai Tam Tuk Valley recommended in his Report on the Water Supply, and I am about to ask the Legislative Council to vote the $20,000 mentioned in paragraph 12 of that report as necessary to cover the expense on such works during the current year.
3. On Mr. Chadwick's advice I also authorised the commencement of the work of establishing street fountains in the City (recommendation (m) page 18 of the report on Sanitation) and I am asking the Council to vote $2,500 for that service during this year.
4. No further expenditure will be incurred this year in connection with the works recommended in these reports.
