I have the honour to inform you that in August last a communication (copy enclosed) was addressed to this Government by Vice-Admiral Sir Cyprian Bridge, K.C.B., Commander-in-Chief on the China Station, in which he strongly urged the necessity of undertaking certain deepening and dredging operations in the Harbour of this Colony. In this letter he pointed out that it was becoming difficult for His Majesty's Ships, with their continually increasing size, to avoid the rocks and shoals which existed in certain portions of the harbour, and that water which was navigated with ease by the Ships of a few years ago was becoming more and more inaccessible to those of recent date. In his opinion, the removal of the shoals South of Caus[?]t Rock was a work which should be undertaken at once, and he affirmed that over those rocks there should be a depth of not less than 35 feet. He added that there should be the same depth of water over all other detached and projecting shoals in the navigable part of the harbour, East of a line from the Royal Naval Torpedo Depôt to Murray Pier.
