In reply to your Despatch No. 113 of the 25th of April last, respecting the calculation of Sir John Carrington's pension, I have the honour to submit for your consideration alternative calculations prepared by the Treasurer.
In that marked 'A' the period of Sir John Carrington's voyage to Hongkong to take up the appointment of Chief Justice is calculated as half-pay leave, while in that marked 'B' the period in question is treated as full service. I am of opinion that such service should count as half-pay leave, but I should like a ruling on the point.
2.
I have to express my regret that this period was omitted from the previous statement of Sir John's service. The Sterling equivalent of the pension was also wrongly calculated in the pension paper.
I have the honour to be,
THE RIGHT HONOURABLE
JOSEPH CHAMBERLAIN, M.P.,
Sir,
Your most obedient
Humble servant,
F. GASCOIGNE
Major-General,
Administering the Government.
