Certain work, in the Estimates, for which provision has been made.

2. It is possible that it may be desirable to make some changes. The Commencement of Bacteriological Institute this year, though placed among the list of works to be postponed by Public Works. In that case, it will be taken by the new Clock Tower, upon which the Director of Public Works estimates that he cannot spend.

REGR 23 JUN 02 The total amount expended during last year upon Extraordinary and Recurrent works amounted to $772,111. The total amount provided in this year's Estimates under these headings is $1,113,816, or $341,705 more than was expended last year.

I therefore consider that there will be a reduction of at least $215,000 under the amounts provided in the Estimates. It will of course be necessary to allow certain works to stand over. It is very probable that they could not be undertaken owing to insufficiency of Staff, but it will be well to regard them as postponed in any case. I propose the following as works to be postponed:-

Quarantine and Segregation Camp. $10,000 Praya East Reclamation. $10,000 Volunteer Head Quarters. $30,000 Slaughter House at Shaukiwan. $8,000 Disinfecting Station in Kowloon. $9,000 Quarters at do. for Inspector. $4,000 Bacteriological Institute. $10,000 Extension of Central Police Station, $15,000 Extension of Mount Gough Station. $9,000 Resumption of Property to provide married quarters for Indian Police. $45,000 Married Quarters at Tsim Sha Tsui Police Station. $10,000 Minor Roads in New Territory. $5,000 Public Mortuary in Kowloon. $5,000 Extension of Plague Hospital, Kennedy Town. $15,000 House for Private Nurses. $12,000 Total. $197,000 Estimated saving on other Votes. $35,000 Total. $232,000

Sir,

I have the honour to be,

Your most obedient humble Servant,

(Sd.) W. Chatham.
