I have
evidence, and it appears through the
most of the Committee's
conclusions
as to the
insufficiency of the staff of the Dept to
carry out the extraordinary
work of Public Works
and to look properly after maintenance of roads, bridges, telephones,
the maintenance
but
and building. We have directed the reduction of this year's programme
as you do not seem at all disposed to carry out their instructions, and it is easily clear that the works must only be postponed, not abandoned; and,
as will be seen
from para 21, of the report, it is
in regard to the maintenance of existing works rather than to the new works that the Committee regard the staff as in need of strengthening.
